Senior UN official: US proposal to fund other agencies instead of UNRWA not viable

A senior UN official has stated that replacing the UN's relief agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in the middle of the Israel-Hamas war would result in a humanitarian disaster. The US and other countries suspended their funding to UNRWA after allegations that employees had ties to terror groups. The US is considering sending funds to other agencies such as the World Food Program or UNICEF instead. However, the UN official argues that replacing UNRWA with other agencies during the war would not be feasible due to the logistical operations and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza being handled by UNRWA. The official also stated that ending UNRWA's mandate would make the conflict's parties liable for distributing aid to Gaza's civilians.
