Palestinian Authority spokesman says US cannot 'remain hostage to Israeli policies'

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, calls on the international community to stop the advance of the Israeli ground offensive into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, saying that 'the US administration must not remain a hostage to Israeli policies.' The spokesman swipes at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for saying in an NBC interview aired on Sunday that the Rafah operation would go ahead 'while providing safe passage for the civilian population so they can leave.' Netanyahu's statements are 'pure nonsense' and 'a deception to the world,' Abu Rudeineh says, 'because there is no longer a safe place in the Gaza Strip, and civilians cannot return [to their homes] in the center and north of the Strip amid the ongoing bombing.' 'The region is at a crossroads, and the continuation of the war against the Palestinian people will lead to its regional expansion,' Abu Rudeineh adds.
