Ultra-Orthodox minister: Haredim not engaged in full-time Torah study should be drafted

Welfare Minister Ya'akov Margi of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party calls for the drafting of Haredi community members not engaged in full-time Torah study. He suggests the establishment of a dedicated department in the Defense Ministry for recruitment. Margi believes that those not enrolled in yeshiva can even be enlisted 'by force'. His comments come amid backlash against an IDF plan to increase military service time, with lawmakers suggesting the burden should fall on the Haredi community. While there has been a small increase in ultra-Orthodox volunteering for duty, most leaders and institutions still reject military service.
