Japan resumes funding to UNRWA for its 'indispensable' aid work in Gaza

Japan has announced that it will resume funding to the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, after suspending it due to allegations that its staff were involved in Hamas's attack on Israel. Japan, the sixth-biggest donor to the agency, and 15 other countries had paused funding, causing turmoil in UNRWA's operations in Gaza. Japan's Foreign Minister stated that UNRWA's role in Gaza is 'indispensable' and that funding will be provided while ensuring the appropriateness of Japan's funds. Israel has shared intelligence indicating that a significant number of UNRWA employees in Gaza are affiliated with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
