Researchers have discovered a 1.4-million-year-old fossil in Spain that suggests the existence of a previously unknown human species in Europe. The fossil, nicknamed Pink, includes a partial left upper jaw, cheekbone, and teeth, but its species cannot be definitively identified. However, researchers tentatively suggest that Pink is related to the human ancestor Homo erectus. The discovery of Pink could help bridge the evolutionary gap between the oldest known human ancestor fossils in Europe and Homo antecessor, which dates back roughly 900,000 years.
