Long NHS waiting lists bolster profits at private health insurer BUPA

Bupa has reported a significant rise in profits and revenue for the first half of 2025, driven by increased demand for private healthcare as patients face long waits for treatment in the public health system. The company saw its pre-tax profits climb 19 percent to £501 million, with global health insurance customers rising by 23 percent to 40.9 million. Bupa's UK and India division experienced especially strong growth, with profits nearly doubling and turnover reaching £2.8 billion. The surge in private healthcare usage comes amid a backdrop of millions of patients waiting for care in the public system, prompting concerns from patient groups and experts about the growing reliance on private providers.
