A new free walking tour in York, created by two University of York students, invites participants to explore the city's Jewish history and its impact on the present-day city centre. The tour highlights significant sites such as Clifford's Tower, the scene of a tragic massacre in 1190, as well as lesser-known locations, including the site of a historic synagogue. The students, motivated by a desire to share untold stories, developed the tour after extensive research and now guide visitors from around the world, fostering discussion and understanding about York's Jewish heritage.
The tour, which operates on a pay-what-you-feel basis, lasts about two hours and aims to commemorate the past while encouraging reflection on how communities can support minorities today. Notable features include daffodils planted as a memorial at Clifford's Tower and a recently installed plaque marking the site of a medieval synagogue. The founders hope the tours will continue beyond their graduation, ensuring that York's rich Jewish history remains accessible to future generations.
