The King shared a heartfelt hug with Yavar Abbas, a 105-year-old Second World War veteran, during a remembrance reception at Windsor Castle. Abbas, who served as a combat cameraman in the British Army and documented major battles in Burma and the aftermath in Japan, reunited with the royal couple alongside other veterans who served in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. The event honoured their service and marked the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, with moving tributes and personal reflections from Abbas on the state of the world and the ongoing conflicts.
The reception was attended by veterans, their families, and notable figures including the Prime Minister and actor Sir Mark Rylance. Guests viewed commemorative displays and the King held the Torch for Peace, symbolising hope for future generations. Abbas expressed both pride in meeting the King and sorrow over the persistence of war, urging reflection on the lessons of history.
