India is on the brink of a major shift in healthcare as genetic science becomes increasingly central to diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases such as epilepsy, cancer, and heart conditions, according to Dr Abhijit Dixit. Despite rapid advancements, significant gaps remain in India's genetic infrastructure and preparedness, with over 200 genetic conditions now treatable and new therapies emerging regularly. Dr Dixit emphasized the importance of early genetic identification, particularly for hereditary cancers and disorders linked to consanguineous marriages, and called for broader adoption of carrier screening and newborn testing. He also highlighted ethical and privacy concerns around genome sequencing, noting the absence of clear national guidelines in India, and cautioned against unnecessary stem cell storage.
