Iran security forces use tear gas in Tehran bazaar as toll rises

Iranian security forces fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators at the Tehran bazaar, as protests over the rising cost of living and the plunging value of the rial continue to sweep the country. According to rights groups, at least 27 protesters, including five minors, have been killed in the crackdown over 10 days of unrest, with more than 1,000 people arrested nationwide. The protest movement began with a shutdown by merchants in the Tehran bazaar and has spread to other regions, notably those with Kurdish and Lor communities. Social media footage shows crowds chanting slogans against the leadership, and reports indicate that authorities have raided hospitals to detain the injured. The government has announced modest economic relief, but officials warn of a tough response to what they call rioters, as the unrest poses a significant challenge to the country's leadership.
