Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh says a truce agreement with Israel is close, raising hopes for the release of hostages taken in the October 7 attacks. The deal includes a five-day truce and the release of between 50 and 100 hostages held by Palestinian militant groups. It would also allow for the release of 300 Palestinians from Israeli jails and the entry of food and medical aid into Gaza. The agreement could bring respite for Gazans who have endured weeks of bombardment and a siege with minimal supplies. Israel has vowed to continue its offensive until the hostages are released.
