Germany's major international film festival, the Berlinale, has disinvited five politicians from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from its upcoming gala launch. The festival's directors stated that it is important for them to take a stand in favor of an open democracy, especially in light of recent revelations about explicitly anti-democratic positions held by the AfD. The decision came after a petition signed by people in the film industry called for the AfD to be kept off the red carpet. The festival's move has been endorsed by Nicola Galliner, founder and longtime director of the Jewish Film Festival Berlin-Brandenburg.
