Egypt threatens to suspend its peace treaty with Israel if Israeli troops are sent into the Gaza border town of Rafah, and warns that fighting there could lead to the closure of the territory's main aid supply route. Over half of Gaza's population have fled to Rafah to escape fighting in other areas, and Egypt fears a mass influx of Palestinian refugees.
