Labour by-election candidate apologises for 'deeply offensive´...

Labour by-election candidate Azhar Ali has apologised for his 'deeply offensive' comments in which he suggested that Israel allowed Hamas to carry out an attack to provide grounds to invade Gaza. Ali made the comments at a meeting of the Lancashire Labour Party and is reported to have said that Sir Keir Starmer had 'lost the confidence' of some MPs on the issue. Despite the controversy, Ali remains as Labour's candidate in the by-election for Rochdale, triggered by the death of sitting MP Sir Tony Lloyd. The by-election will take place on February 29.
