An elderly man in Alaska has become the first person to die from the Alaskapox virus, according to the state's health department. The virus was first discovered in 2015 and has since infected seven people. Symptoms of Alaskapox include lesions, and the health department has advised patients to avoid touching them and keep them covered and dry. The victim of the virus lived alone in a forested area and had no recent travel or close contacts with similar lesions. The man cared for a stray cat, which tested negative for antibodies and orthopoxvirus.
