Turkish President faces blow during local elections

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his party faced a significant blow in the local elections as Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu emerged as his main political rival. Imamoglu led by ten percentage points in the mayoral race in Istanbul, marking the worst defeat for Erdogan and his AK Party in their more than two decades in power. The defeat was attributed to factors such as soaring inflation, dissatisfied Islamist voters, and Imamoglu's appeal beyond the CHP's secular base. Analysts believe that Imamoglu's ability to reach across socio-political divisions makes him the most competitive rival to Erdogan's regime.
