Wildcard candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran's president, becoming the first reformist president in almost two decades. He campaigned on promises to moderate Iran's conservative outlook and improve relations with the West, calling for negotiations over the 2015 nuclear deal. However, analysts remain sceptical about his ability to enact meaningful change within an establishment dominated by ultraconservatives. Despite being approved as a candidate by the Guardian Council, which vets candidates' credentials, Mr Pezeshkian carefully balanced promises of change with declarations of loyalty to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
