Haredi youth pour into Israeli national service since start of war

Recent data shows a 65% increase in the number of participants joining the national-civil service frameworks in Israel, particularly from the ultra-Orthodox community. Between July 2023 and June 2024, 811 ultra-Orthodox individuals chose this path, compared to 492 in the previous year. In total, around 1,500 ultra-Orthodox individuals are currently serving in various national-civil service tracks. The outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War has led to significantly higher numbers of new recruits each month, with a record of 177 recruits in June 2024. The security service track, which includes institutions like the police and Shin Bet, saw a 108% increase in the past year.
