Iran claims to be one of the top superpowers in air defenses, but much of its arsenal is built on recycled ideas and materials. The country's air defense is based on increasing the capabilities of Soviet systems and reverse engineering existing systems. Iran has also exported technology to other countries and groups, including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. However, the downing of a Ukrainian Airlines flight in January 2020 highlights the problems with focusing solely on killing power and range without considering the basics of air defense. Despite its relative poverty, Iran has achieved impressive results in its missile and drone programs.
