Hezbollah's conflict with Israel along the Lebanese border makes no sense as Israel has long retreated from Lebanese soil and does not challenge Hezbollah's power. The conflict lacks a clear objective and is perpetuating itself without yielding any value. Hezbollah was created as a consequence of the checkered history of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and aimed to remove the Israeli presence from Lebanon. Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000, but Hezbollah continued carrying out terrorist attacks against Israel. The UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, has proven largely ineffective in curbing Hezbollah's attacks and restoring peace.
