Report: IDF mulling expanded op in Syria, checking whether Sharaa's forces fired on troops

The military is reportedly weighing a broader operation in southern Syria after troops came under fire during an arrest mission in the village of Beit Jinn. The incident, which left six soldiers wounded, occurred as forces detained two members of an Islamist group suspected of planning attacks on Israel. In response to the gunfire, the military returned fire and carried out several airstrikes, resulting in at least 13 reported deaths according to Syrian media.

The operation highlights growing tensions along the border, with Israel investigating whether Syrian government forces were involved in the attack. Officials are considering shifting tactics from ground arrests to increased airstrikes if direct involvement is confirmed. Syria condemned the operation, calling it a 'war crime' and accusing Israel of seeking to escalate regional conflict. The military has maintained a presence in southern Syria since late 2024, aiming to prevent weapons from reaching hostile groups.
