A new Palestinian militia led by Shawqi Abu Nasira has emerged in Gaza, aiming to challenge Hamas's dominance as the group regroups during the ongoing ceasefire. Abu Nasira, a former Palestinian Authority police official whose son was killed by Hamas, now leads a small band of fighters in territory under Israeli control. He claims that many Gazans, suffering from displacement and deprivation, no longer support Hamas and are seeking alternatives.
The ceasefire has led to a proliferation of local militias and clan-based groups across Gaza, none matching Hamas in strength but increasingly visible as centralized authority weakens. Abu Nasira says these factions are beginning to coordinate, with hopes of forming a unified force to act as a National Guard for East Gaza. He insists that Palestinians themselves, not outside powers, should remove Hamas, but stresses the need for international support.
Abu Nasira warns that the threat posed by Hamas extends beyond Gaza, linking the group to broader regional networks. He rejects long-term strategies that would allow Hamas to regain strength, arguing that immediate action and unity among Palestinian factions are essential to ending Hamas's rule.
