IDF officer whose promotion was blocked by Katz calls move 'political,' not 'professional'

Col. German Giltman, a retired officer, has criticized Defense Minister Israel Katz's decision to block his promotion to brigadier-general as a 'political decision, not a professional one.' Katz rejected Giltman's appointment due to his alleged involvement in a reservist protest group, and has frozen all senior appointments in the military amid ongoing disputes over investigations into the army's failures during the October 7 attack.

Giltman, who has served extensively in the reserves, stated that he would remain in his current role and emphasized his commitment to serving the state, denying any calls for refusal to serve. He agreed to withdraw his candidacy for the senior position to keep the military free from political influence, but reaffirmed his dedication to the army.

The controversy comes as Katz and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir clash over military appointments and accountability for the October 7 events. Katz insists on waiting for further investigations before approving any promotions, while Zamir has proceeded with appointments and disciplinary actions, deepening the rift between military and political leadership.
