Authorities in North Carolina have thwarted a planned New Year's Eve attack after arresting 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant from Mint Hill. According to officials, Christian intended to target people inside a grocery store and a fast-food restaurant, motivated by his identification with the extremist group known as Islamic State.
Investigators discovered knives, hammers, and detailed plans for the attack in his home. The suspect's writings revealed intentions to harm Jews, Christians, and members of the LGBT community, and he expressed a desire to die as a 'holy martyr.' The plot was uncovered when Christian began online communications with someone he believed was an extremist contact, who was actually an undercover government employee.
Christian was arrested on December 31 after being released from a medical facility. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
