US forces, together with coalition partners, have launched major strikes against Islamic State targets across Syria, following a deadly attack on American and Syrian personnel in Palmyra. The operation, named Hawkeye Strike, began on December 19, 2025, and has involved extensive airstrikes and ground operations, resulting in the elimination or capture of nearly 25 Islamic State militants in the days that followed. The strikes targeted more than 70 locations in central Syria, using over 100 precision munitions, as part of an ongoing effort to prevent future attacks and protect American and allied forces in the region.
Despite losing most of its territory in previous years, Islamic State sleeper cells continue to pose a threat in Syria and Iraq, carrying out sporadic attacks. US and coalition forces remain committed to pursuing those responsible for terrorism and have vowed to respond forcefully to any harm against their personnel.
