A new report by UN Watch alleges that several United Nations human rights rapporteurs operate without meaningful ethical oversight or accountability, raising concerns about bias and foreign influence. The organization claims there is no effective procedure to remove envoys accused of misconduct, creating what it describes as a bloc of officials shielded by diplomatic immunity and lacking consequences for their actions.
The report specifically highlights Alena Douhan, the United Nations special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights. It alleges that she received 1.3 million dollars in funding from China, Russia and Qatar. According to the findings, her official visits to countries including Iran, China, Syria, Qatar and Venezuela may have served to legitimize authoritarian governments rather than support civilian victims of human rights abuses.
