Edith (Dita) Kraus, a Holocaust survivor known as the 'Auschwitz Librarian', has died at the age of 96. Born in Prague in 1929, Kraus endured deportation to the Theresienstadt ghetto and later to Auschwitz, where she became the librarian for the children's block. Despite the horrors of the camp, she helped maintain a small library and supported educational activities for the children, working alongside educators like Fredy Hirsch. After surviving forced labor camps and the loss of her parents, Kraus returned to Prague, married fellow survivor Otto Kraus, and eventually immigrated to Israel, where she spent decades as a teacher. Her story inspired the book 'The Librarian of Auschwitz', and she was recognized for her role in preserving hope and education during one of history's darkest times.
