President Isaac Herzog has begun a two-day state visit to Ethiopia, shortly after returning from Australia, in a move aimed at reinforcing Israel's longstanding relationship with the African nation. The visit highlights the deep historical and diplomatic ties between the two countries, which date back to biblical traditions linking the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon.
In the modern era, relations included close contact between Israeli leaders and Emperor Haile Selassie, as well as significant Israeli military assistance to Ethiopia even before formal diplomatic relations were established. Although ties were severed after the Yom Kippur War, full diplomatic relations were restored in 1992, and both countries now maintain embassies.
Herzog is scheduled to meet with President Taye Atske Selassie, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, and members of the local Jewish community. His visit comes at a time when Israel is seeking to strengthen its standing in Africa, particularly as some African nations have taken positions critical of Israel in recent years.
