The Knesset National Security Committee has approved the Death Penalty for Terrorists bill for its second and third readings, paving the way for a final vote in the Knesset plenum as early as next week. The legislation, advanced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Member of Knesset Limor Son Har-Melech, would mandate the death penalty for terrorists who intentionally cause a person's death during an attack motivated by nationalist ideology.
Under the proposed law, courts would be required to impose the death sentence without discretion for leniency, and a unanimous decision by the panel of judges would not be necessary. Executions would be carried out by hanging within 90 days of a final verdict, and the President would be stripped of the authority to grant clemency in such cases.
Supporters of the bill described it as a historic step aimed at restoring deterrence and preventing future prisoner release deals involving convicted terrorists. Committee Chair Tzvika Foghel and other backers called on coalition members to support the measure in the upcoming plenum vote, framing it as a critical tool in the fight against terrorism.
