Japan sees wins for far-right anti-immigration party that denounced 'Jewish capital'

Japan's far-right Sanseito party has made significant gains in the country's latest parliamentary elections, increasing its presence in the upper house from one to fifteen seats. The party, led by Sohei Kamiya, is known for its nationalist and anti-immigration stance, as well as rhetoric denouncing 'Jewish capital.' Sanseito's rise has disrupted the long-standing dominance of the center-right Liberal Democratic Party and sparked calls for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to resign.

Founded during the COVID pandemic, Sanseito built its base through social media and opposition to public health measures, while promoting conspiracy theories about global elites. Despite accusations of antisemitism, Kamiya has denied such claims, citing his past involvement with the Japan-Israel Friendship Society. The party's campaign focused on restricting immigration, limiting foreign investment, and opposing gender equality policies, resonating with voters concerned about inflation and economic challenges.
