Argentine authorities conducted a raid at the former residence of a fugitive Nazi officer in search of an 18th-century Italian portrait believed to have been stolen from a Jewish collector during the Second World War. The painting, 'Portrait of a Lady (Contessa Colleoni)' by Giuseppe Ghislandi, was once owned by Jacques Goudstikker, a prominent Dutch art dealer who fled the Netherlands in 1940. The artwork had recently surfaced in a real estate listing for the property, which is linked to the family of Friedrich Kadgien, a senior Nazi official who settled in Buenos Aires after the war.
Despite expectations, police found only a large tapestry depicting horses where the painting had been photographed. The search did yield German documents and prints from the 1940s, but the missing artwork remains unaccounted for. Argentine officials have pledged to continue their investigation to recover the looted painting.
