Report: PM stayed away from Egypt summit to avoid blowback from base for Abbas, other controversial Mideast leaders

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly decided not to attend a summit in Egypt after concerns arose about potential backlash from his political base and right-wing coalition. The summit included Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and other controversial Middle Eastern leaders, such as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Netanyahu has consistently opposed any role for the Palestinian Authority in post-war Gaza and has drawn parallels between the authority and Hamas. Erdogan, meanwhile, has been a vocal critic of Israel during the Gaza conflict, even comparing Netanyahu to Hitler.
