The Federal Bureau of Investigation has accused Mahmoud Amin Ya'qub Al-Muhtadi, a Louisiana resident, of participating in the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023 and subsequently lying about his involvement to obtain a United States visa. According to a criminal complaint unsealed this week, Al-Muhtadi allegedly armed himself and led a group from Gaza into southern Israel during the attack, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the kidnapping of more than 250 people. The complaint details Al-Muhtadi's affiliation with the military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine and his yearslong involvement with Hamas-aligned paramilitary activities, including firearms training.
Al-Muhtadi is accused of denying any ties to terrorist organizations on his visa application, which allowed him to become a legal permanent resident in 2024. The FBI alleges he coordinated an armed group during the attack and later relocated to Louisiana, where he was monitored by agents. Evidence from social media and communications suggests he remained in contact with associates and continued to express support for Hamas. Al-Muhtadi faces charges of visa fraud and conspiracy to provide support for a foreign terrorist organization. He is currently being held at a correctional center near Lafayette and was scheduled to appear in federal court.
