Tamil Nadu's three major ports are set to undergo a transformative expansion, with over '1.2 lakh crore in investments committed to modernizing infrastructure, improving cargo handling, and boosting connectivity. The Chennai Port Authority will receive the largest share, supporting its role as a key export hub for the automobile industry, while Kamarajar Port and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority in Tuticorin will upgrade container terminals, bulk cargo capabilities, and ship repair facilities. These upgrades aim to address longstanding bottlenecks, reduce logistics costs, and enhance the state's competitiveness in global markets, especially for industries such as footwear, textiles, electronics, defence, and renewables. Exporters and industry leaders have welcomed the move, anticipating faster vessel turnaround, increased frequency of direct mothership calls, and improved integration with global supply chains. The expansion is expected to benefit not only local manufacturers but also emerging industrial hubs and neighbouring regions, marking a significant step forward for South India's logistics ecosystem.
