High Court to review justice minister's power to appoint a supervisor in a criminal investigation

The High Court of a Justice will convene all 11 justices to reconsider whether the justice minister can appoint a supervisor for a criminal investigation when top legal officials face a conflict of interest. This follows a request from a liberal organization challenging a previous ruling that upheld the minister's authority in the Sde Teiman video leak case. The appointment process has faced setbacks, with the court rejecting two nominees so far but maintaining the minister's right to select a supervisor. The court has scheduled February 18 for final brief submissions, with a full hearing expected in the first half of 2026.

The review comes amid concerns that the original decision could allow increased political influence in criminal prosecutions, prompting calls for more rigorous judicial oversight. Despite ongoing legal debates, the selection process for the supervisor will continue as planned.
