Rare 15th Century Jewish Prayer Book, Looted by the Nazis, to Be Sold

A rare 15th-century Jewish prayer book, known as a mahzor, is set to be sold at auction after being returned to the Rothschild family. Created in 1415 and lavishly decorated with gold and silver leaf, the manuscript was confiscated from the Rothschilds by the Nazis during the Holocaust and remained hidden in the Austrian National Library for decades. The book resurfaced after a 2021 exhibition in Vienna, prompting provenance research and its restitution to the family in 2023. The mahzor, valued at $5 to $7 million, will be on public display in New York before its auction, highlighting its remarkable survival through centuries of upheaval and loss.
