Nearly 130 yachts set off from Sydney Harbour in the 80th edition of the Sydney to Hobart race, with many crews scattering rose petals in tribute to the victims of the recent Bondi Beach shooting. The race began under challenging conditions, with rough seas and strong winds forecast for the initial stages as the fleet heads toward Tasmania. LawConnect, one of the leading supermaxis, led the fleet out, while Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe joined the race for the first time. The event also highlights a diverse field, including international entrants and a rare all-woman crew, as sailors prepare for a demanding journey across the notorious Bass Strait.
