US takes aim at Muslim Brotherhood in Arab world

The United States has officially designated the Muslim Brotherhood branches in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan as terrorist organizations, intensifying pressure on the pan-Islamist movement that has seen its influence wane across the Arab world. This action fulfills longstanding requests from Arab allies and conservative groups in the United States, and is part of a broader effort to curb the Brotherhood's alleged involvement in violence and destabilization. The designation blocks assets and criminalizes transactions with the groups, while also restricting members' ability to travel to the United States.

The decision comes amid accusations that the Brotherhood has coordinated with Hamas and allied with Hezbollah in attacks against Israel. The move is also seen as a response to concerns raised by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which have sought to suppress the Brotherhood due to its vision of a unified Islamic caliphate. The United States had previously hesitated to take this step, partly to avoid straining relations with Turkey, whose president has longstanding ties to the movement.
