Jordanian authorities have reportedly used digital forensic tools developed by an Israeli company to extract data from the personal devices of activists and human rights defenders involved in pro-Palestinian protests, according to a new investigation by The Citizen Lab. The analysis found that multiple devices belonging to detained or interrogated individuals had undergone forensic data extraction using these tools.
The technology in question enables users to bypass device security and encryption, raising concerns about privacy violations and the targeting of political dissidents. The Citizen Lab argues that such use likely breaches international human rights law, which restricts surveillance of civil society actors.
The Israeli company stated that it licenses its technology only for operations conducted under valid legal authority and emphasized its commitment to ethical use. However, The Citizen Lab has called for greater transparency and an investigation into the company's clients in Jordan.
