The Town School on Manhattan's Upper East Side recently hosted its third annual Shabbat celebration, drawing about 240 students, parents, and educators. This tradition, started in the wake of the October 7 attack on Israel, has grown to include many non-Jewish families, fostering a sense of community and empathy. The event featured matzah ball soup, blessings over challah and candles, and Hebrew songs, with educational activities designed to highlight universal concepts of peace and togetherness.

School officials and parents say the Shabbat gathering has helped create a welcoming environment, especially as tensions over identity and antisemitism have affected other New York City schools. The Town School's approach emphasizes inclusion, with Shabbat joining other cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year and Persian New Year. Organizers and attendees noted the importance of community and hope during uncertain times, with many expressing gratitude for the school's commitment to honoring diverse traditions.

Other non-Jewish private schools in the city have also held Shabbat events, but the Town School stands out for its annual commitment and growing participation. The celebration has become a meaningful way for families of all backgrounds to connect and learn, reflecting broader efforts to build understanding and solidarity within the school community.
