The Trump Organization has announced plans to build what it says will be Australia's tallest skyscraper on Queensland's Gold Coast. The 335-metre tower, named Trump International Hotel & Tower, Gold Coast, is expected to cost at least $1 billion and will surpass the height of the Shard in London. Construction on the 91-storey development is scheduled to begin in August.
The project will include 285 hotel rooms, 272 luxury residential apartments, high-end retail spaces, restaurants and a private beach club along the beachfront. Eric Trump said the development would bring 'the prestige and allure of a world-class luxury brand' to Australia. It will be the company's first official project in the country.
However, the tower may face competition from other proposed developments in the same area, including a twin-tower project planned to be 50 metres taller. The Trump Organization has also faced ongoing criticism over potential conflicts of interest tied to Donald Trump's role as President of the United States, including past investigations into the financial performance of its Washington hotel, allegations the company has denied.
