An Israeli intelligence agent has been indicted on charges of profiting from the smuggling of goods into the Gaza Strip during the two-year war, according to Israeli prosecutors. The case marks the first publicly known instance since the start of the war in which a member of Israel's domestic intelligence agency has faced such allegations.
Prosecutors said the agent, along with other Israeli citizens and one Palestinian, received large bribes and was accused of aiding an enemy during wartime. The arrest comes amid broader investigations into Israelis, including military reservists, suspected of exploiting their positions to run lucrative smuggling operations into Gaza.
During the war, Israel imposed strict restrictions and at times a full blockade on Gaza, contributing to severe food shortages and a humanitarian crisis affecting more than two million residents. Although a cease-fire five months ago led to increased aid and lower food prices, some goods remain restricted, creating opportunities for illicit trade.
Earlier this month, more than ten Israelis were charged with smuggling cigarettes and other goods into Gaza, with some allegedly earning millions of dollars. It remains unclear whether the intelligence agent's case is connected to those earlier indictments.
