United States President Donald Trump has endorsed Brandon Herrera, the Republican Party congressional candidate in Texas's 23rd District, despite renewed scrutiny over Herrera's past comments related to Nazis. In a post on his social media platform, Trump praised Herrera as a strong defender of gun rights and said he would protect the Second Amendment.
Herrera, a firearms-focused video creator, became the party's nominee after incumbent Representative Tony Gonzales withdrew from the race amid an investigation into an admitted affair with a former staff member. Herrera is known for opposing gun control legislation introduced after the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and for producing content featuring historical Nazi-era weapons and provocative humor related to that period.
Criticism resurfaced over a past podcast episode in which Herrera discussed owning a copy of Adolf Hitler's 'Mein Kampf.' Herrera said he does not agree with the book's teachings and argued that clips of his remarks were taken out of context. His campaign has denied accusations of antisemitism, saying he has condemned Hitler and has support from leaders within the Jewish community. However, some Jewish political organizations continue to oppose his candidacy.
