Israel says killed Iran national security chief Larijani

Israel said it killed Iran's national security chief Ali Larijani in a strike on Tehran, describing his death as a major blow to the Islamic republic. The claim has not been confirmed by Iran. Israel also reported killing Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force, as part of a wave of attacks on Iranian targets.

The reported killings come weeks after joint American and Israeli strikes that killed Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a widening regional war. His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen publicly, and uncertainty surrounds his condition and whereabouts. Hundreds have died and millions have been displaced across Iran and Lebanon as fighting intensifies.

The conflict has disrupted global energy markets after Iran targeted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas supplies. Oil prices surged as countries hesitated over calls from United States President Donald Trump to join a naval coalition to protect tankers. Several European governments signaled reluctance to expand their military involvement.

Violence has also spread to Lebanon and Iraq, with Israeli strikes hitting Beirut's southern suburbs and attacks targeting the United States embassy in Baghdad. Regional tensions remain high as Iran retaliates against American and Israeli interests and civilians across the Gulf.
