Iranians mark Eid as Trump mulls winding down war

Thousands of Iranians marked Eid al-Fitr with prayers across the country as fighting with the United States and Israel continued. The main ceremony in Tehran was led by the head of the judiciary instead of the supreme leader, who has remained out of public view since taking power earlier this month after his father was killed in a joint United States and Israeli strike. Russia’s president sent a message of support, calling Moscow a loyal partner during what he described as severe trials.

Iran said the United States and Israel targeted its Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, which houses underground centrifuges and had previously been damaged. Authorities reported no leakage of nuclear material. The conflict, now in its third week, has driven up global energy prices, disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and strained Washington’s relations with allies.

President Donald Trump said the United States was close to achieving its objectives and was considering winding down military operations, although additional marines are reportedly being deployed to the region. Fighting has also spread to Lebanon, where Israeli strikes and clashes with Hezbollah have caused heavy casualties and mass displacement. Amid soaring oil prices, the United States temporarily eased sanctions on certain Iranian oil shipments loaded before March 20 to help stabilize supply.
