A Cabinet minister has sought to reassure the public that the United Kingdom can defend itself after Iran demonstrated a longer missile range than previously believed. Steve Reed said the government is 'perfectly capable' of protecting the country, despite concerns raised after Iran launched missiles toward the joint United States and United Kingdom base on Diego Garcia. One missile fell short and another was intercepted, but the distance covered has prompted fresh questions about Tehran's capabilities.
Israeli officials warned that several European capitals, including London, could potentially fall within range of Iranian long distance missiles. Some defence experts have suggested Britain would need to rely on missile defence systems operated by allies in Europe to counter any ballistic attack. Reed, however, said there is no specific assessment that Iran is targeting the United Kingdom.
The minister also downplayed fears of fuel rationing as tensions escalate in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked. While confirming that contingency plans exist, he said there is currently no need for rationing and urged the public to continue buying fuel as normal. The crisis comes as the United States considers further military action and economic pressures mount over rising energy prices.
