Two minors have been arrested after a car was set on fire in Antwerp's Jewish quarter, prompting a judge to investigate the case as potential arson linked to participation in a terrorist group. The blaze occurred late Monday in the diamond district, an area home to much of the city's Orthodox Jewish community, and the suspects were detained shortly afterward. Authorities are also examining a video circulating online that claims responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes amid a series of recent acts targeting Jewish communities across Europe following the outbreak of war involving the United States and Iran. Earlier this month, an explosion struck a synagogue in Liege, and other reported arson attacks have targeted Jewish sites in London and the Netherlands. None of those incidents resulted in injuries.
Belgian authorities have increased security around Jewish institutions, deploying additional forces to guard synagogues, schools and daycare centers in Antwerp and Brussels. Investigators are still working to determine the motives behind the Antwerp fire and whether the Jewish community was deliberately targeted.
