Most Americans say US military action against Iran has gone too...

Most Americans say recent military action by the United States against Iran has gone too far, according to a new poll by The Associated Press and a public affairs research center. As the conflict enters its fourth week, about 59 percent of adults describe the military response as excessive, raising concerns that the war could become a political liability for President Donald Trump even as his overall approval rating remains steady at around 4 in 10.

Economic anxiety is also rising alongside the conflict. About 45 percent of Americans say they are extremely or very concerned about being able to afford gasoline in the coming months, a notable increase from earlier this year. While roughly two-thirds of Americans consider preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon an important goal, a similar share say keeping oil and gas prices from rising is equally important.

Support for the military action is sharply divided along party lines. Most Democrats and independents say the strikes have gone too far, while Republicans are more split, with about half calling the response appropriate. Majorities oppose sending ground troops to fight Iran, and about half of Americans express little or no trust in Trump to make the right decisions about the use of military force abroad.
