Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the possibility of moving the ongoing conflict involving Iran toward a political and diplomatic resolution. According to a statement from Russia's foreign ministry, the talks focused on the escalating crisis in the Middle East, which Moscow described as the result of unprovoked aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran.
The ministers exchanged views on shifting the confrontation into negotiations grounded in international law while considering the interests of countries in the region. Lavrov also provided details about Russia's latest shipment of humanitarian assistance to Iran.
Russia and Iran recently signed a strategic partnership agreement covering political, economic, military, and energy cooperation, though it does not include a mutual defense clause. Meanwhile, European foreign ministers raised concerns during a Group of Seven meeting that Moscow may be assisting Tehran with intelligence and drone technology, allegations supported by Western security sources who say Russia has provided satellite imagery and technical support to Iran.
