Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India supports resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy amid escalating tensions in West Asia following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. Expressing grave concern over the situation, he emphasised the need for restraint, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and prioritising the safety of civilians.
India has been actively engaging regional leaders, with the prime minister speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the President of the United Arab Emirates, while External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held discussions with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts. New Delhi has reiterated its call for an early cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
The government has also focused on the safety of Indian nationals in the region. Indian embassies in affected countries have issued advisories, activated round-the-clock helplines, and coordinated with local authorities. The Cabinet Committee on Security reviewed the evolving crisis, assessed risks to the large Indian community in West Asia, and directed departments to take necessary measures to assist citizens.
In a relief for Indian and other foreign students stranded in Iran, authorities there have allowed them to exit through land borders and assured alternative arrangements for examinations and academic requirements, as airspace closures and security concerns continue to disrupt normal activities.
